Rosey Cummings
My work is drawn from the traditions of weaving, fibreart and sculpture. It is influenced by the natural world where I live and the materials I collect locally. I incorporate these into my work and explore the use of marine debris (particularly washed up beach-rope) to highlight the complexities of current environmental issues on marine and coastal ecosystems.
As I work, I reflect on the structures, forms and colours of the materials and where they are collected. Challenges emerge; what are they telling me about where they are found? What do I want to say? How much do I deconstruct them? How do I see them in different ways and find a balance between their inherent form, construction and various weaving techniques, as I manipulate them into each work. Therefore my works are always individual and are imbued with the nuances, context and issues of where the materials are found.
