Port Douglas Artists Illuminate the Tropics with Northern Illumination

Port Douglas Artists Inc. presents Northern Illumination, a curated exhibition exploring the many meanings and expressions of light in Far North Queensland.

Held at the Douglas Shire Community Hall, Mowbray Street, Port Douglas. The exhibition runs from Friday 2 October to Saturday 10 October 2026, open daily from 10 am – 4.30 pm, with the official opening celebration on Thursday 1 October from 5.30 pm.

The exhibition brings together artists from across the Douglas Shire, responding to the theme of illumination in all its forms, from tropical sunlight, moonlight, and shadow to inner transformation, cultural identity, and experimental approaches to light and materials.

Featuring painting, ceramics, photography, drawing, mixed media, sculpture and digital art, Northern Illumination celebrates the diversity and creativity of the region’s artistic community.

Featured artists include Sarah Goldfinch, Leanne Emmitt and Tim Ellis, all finalists in the Lethbridge 2026 awards, alongside ceramic artists Sam Mathews Moo, Caroline Walker Grime, Gabrielle Cooney aka Flintstone Design, Laini Eckardt, Jeanette Warwick and Pauline Bladin.

The exhibition also features painters Gail Shaw, Janet Morris, Rod Sherlock, Jacqueline Joosen, Jacki Elms, Lou Derry, Sue Gilmore, Kathi Klinger, Victoria Park, Terry Johnson, Tania Heben and Donna Ward, with digital and paper works by David Starlyte, Perrin Clarke, Awena Daniel and Leandro Furlanetto.

Curated by Chrissie McLaughlin, the exhibition offers audiences an opportunity to experience the distinctive light, colour and creative spirit of Far North Queensland.
